Design Narratives for Interactive Product Design:
design narratives
Design narratives are tool to understand, convey and represent people experiences
• stories
• scenarios
• storyboarding
narratives as communication tool
A collaborative activity involving designers, users, managers
• narratives are memorable
• narratives have an informality that suits uncertainty in a design process

narratives as information tool
• tell about people, what they do, and how they do it
• reveal what people like about their work, what they hate about it, what works well, what sorts of things are real problems

narratives as a design tool
• help users to describe experiences from their own perspective
• help designers to describe a potential experience to the users
• provides a walk-thru opportunity to identify the use-problems
• helps to identify design goals based on intended experiences

stories
concrete account of particular people and events, inparticular situations. They are personal and portraits atypical events
• stories tells about the way people think about their experiences
• stories are the way people store information in their memories
• stories help up imagine

scenarios
typical situations, intended to capture the normal chain of events, the prototypical situations
• describe a use situation and the interaction between users and proposed systems
• A scenario tells a story of a Persona successfully achieving a goal while using a device/system
• Scenarios are usually developed by the design team and presented to users for feedback
• make it clear in which sequence the tasks are to be performed, what information is necessary for the users to achieve their goals.

from narratives to role-playing videos
1. a goal: the plot
2. a scenario /design problem: context, pain points
3. a prototype
4. acting out the scenario
5. video recording

tutorial
Develop a design narrative for your concept design demonstrating the user experience afforded by your new product.
1. Select the pain point and story that best demonstrate your design
2. Devise a plot (a story) of: (i) your Persona’s user experience at those pain point moments, and (ii) your product as the ‘hero’ solution of the problem.
3. Draft a storyboard – ensure the story is suitable for under 2min video
4. Record your video – collaborate in groups of 2 or 3 where possible.
